Structural Color Explained - with @Ecotasia
Blue feathers use shape instead of pigment to appear blue. I ask Backyard Expeditions to explain how it works. And we finally get to the bottom of the mystery of structural color! Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: https://BioBush.tv/subscribe

Quick recap on structural color. If you hold a blue feather up to the light and look through it, it will turn grey. It's true! This is because there are small air bubbles or thin films that bounce out blue light. They only work from certain angles, though, so they lose their blue depending on what angle you view them from.
I knew it was air bubbles and films. I knew the distance between bubbles was important. But I couldn't figure out more. So I asked Ecotasia to explain. I'm pretty sure this question is worth a Master's degree if explained thoroughly enough. But he did it! A clear, concise explanation of the physical interactions behind structural color. With animations! Big thanks to Ecotasia!
This was part of a collaboration we did where we made a video for each other's channels. In return for this massively complicated topic, Backyard Expeditions asked if I could get excited about woodpeckers. I was like, "CAN I?" So you can see me get excited about woodpeckers over on his channel: https://BioBush.tv/woodpeckers
