Imam of Harlem: On Being Black & Muslim in America | #BHeard

For over twenty years, Imam Talib 'Abdur-Rashid has ran Harlem’s Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood (MIB); and for twenty years he has provided a religious sanctuary for its predominantly African-American congregation, who have increasingly felt the weight of being both Muslim and black in America.

African-Americans make up the largest segment of Muslims living in the country, about 40 percent, yet they’ve been alienated from conversations on combating anti-Muslim sentiments.

In this piece, we get a glimpse into how Imam Talib is continuing the legacy of Malcolm X in protests and sermons, we hear about some of the most pressing issues that face his community, and we learn about how a united Muslim community can help fight religious discrimination, and defend civil rights at a time when they are increasingly coming under attack.
