A point guard drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2019, Ja Morant rapidly made an impression in the NBA and was named the Rookie of the Year in 2020. His prowess on the court, however, would soon come to be contrasted by his legal problems outside of it. According to a lawsuit filed in September by the victim in Shelby County, Tennessee, he and Morant had been involved in an argument during the game. A friend of Morant’s reportedly joined in the brawl. Moments later, the NBA star went into his house and emerged. The mother subsequently took him to the hospital and filed a police report, with deputies describing that the victim had a “large knot” on the side of his face as a result of the altercation. No criminal charges were filed and the suit remained unresolved as of the latest updates. His mother had reportedly gotten into an argument with an employee and called the NBA player for backup. He arrived at the mall with an entourage of at least nine people and a confrontation ensued with the establishment’s head of security. The authorities were called after Morant and his posse refused to leave the parking lot. As the group eventually cleared off, the NBA star was heard saying in reference to the security worker “Let me find out what time he gets off." In March of 2023, law enforcement in Glendale, Colorado, started investigating Morant. The incident occurred during an Instagram livestream, just hours after the Grizzlies had lost to the Denver Nuggets. In the aftermath, Morant entered a counseling program in Florida and took some time off from the team.
