In this video, I’m going to show you exactly when is the right time to roll put options, how you can extend the time on a put option by rolling it out, and how to roll a deep in the money put option.

When is the right time to roll you put options? Let’s consider the example of a trade we did in Medtronic ticker symbol MDT. When there’s not much option premium left, it’s time to either roll that put out in time or close it out and use that capital to enter a put in a new stock.

The second tip or a little secret I want to share with you is how to extend a put option position, also known as rolling out your option. Because we are option traders, we’re going to use one of our secret weapons and if we don’t get the trade exactly right, we just roll this thing out until the next month or to a later date. That’s exactly what we did here with BIP. Here is how you can extend a short put option position.

Here’s an example of a position that I’m in the process of extending the put option trade on in Bank of America ticker symbol BAC. This is a way that even if you were wrong on a trade, and the stock has moved against you, this is a way to extend the trade, which will enable you to win.

Let’s talk about how to roll a deep in the money put option. When you have a put option you sold, that is now deep in the money, and you don’t want it assigned to you, it's important to make sure there’s still some time value premium left in the option. So set an alert to remind you to roll your short put options when there’s not much time value left. You might actually get a better return by looking farther out in time than just 30 days.
