The JUSTIFIED Executions OF The Female Guards Of Auschwitz

After World War 2, a number of trials took place to bring those perpetrators of war crimes to justice. As the Allies advanced towards the heart of the Third Reich, they uncovered networks of concentration camps, in which the true horror of Hitler's regime was uncovered. Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Red Army, and the prisoners of the camp told of barbaric treatment at the hands of the guards. The womens camp in Auschwitz was known for its horror, with terrible sanitation, disease spreading quickly throughout and also the cruelty of the female guards. Some of the women who worked at Auschwitz, such as Irma Grese and Maria Mandl have gone down for their horrific treatment of the prisoners.

After the Second World War, 40 members of staff were brought in front of a judge in the Auschwitz Trial that took place in Krakow. Despite thousands working at Auschwitz, only a small amount of SS Staff and guards were punished for their war crimes. Of the 40, there were 5 women on trial, Maria Mandl who was known as 'The Beast,' for her brutality, Therese Brandl, Luise Danz, Hildegard Lachert and Alice Orlowski. Mandl was the most high profile female defendant, and she was known for murdering prisoners with her own hands, beating them savagely and also sending thousands to their deaths in selections. Mandl was accused of being involved in the deaths of 500,000 prisoners. The other women were accused of barbaric treatment.

However when the verdict of the trials sentenced only two female guards to death, these being Mandl and Brandl. They were both executed at Montelupich Prison in Krakow along with the male guards and staff who were condemned. There were many other women who were sentenced to death who worked at Auschwitz, such as Irma Grese and Elisabeth Volkenrath. However these women were sentenced to death following other trials such as the Belsen Trials.
