From Margins to Center Stage: Redefining Latinidad in Classical Music | ZULY INIRIO | TEDxCMU
NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf
Opera and classical music are two worlds that have historically excluded the narratives of BIPOC composers and artists. In Zuly Inirio’s talk, “From Margins to Center Stage: Redefining Latinidad in Classical Music,” we will explore how one can reclaim their cultural identity in a space that rejects it and how efforts are underway to highlight the contributions of those composers who have been excluded from the canon. Zuly Inirio, an Afro-Latina soprano from the Dominican Republic, champions representation and equity for BIPOC in classical music. Her "Afro-Latinx Song and Opera Project" commissions new works, decolonizes the classical music canon, and elevates the stories of Afro-Latin composers. Notable performances include Verdi's Requiem in Munich and Aida in Sicily. Winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society's Major Artist Competition, Dr. Inirio collaborates with various ensembles and holds fellowships with the Sphinx Organization, NALAC, and 1Hood. With a Doctorate of Musical Arts and a master's in social work, she co-directs the Center for Ethnic Studies Research at the University of Pittsburgh. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
