Top 10 Cookie Decorating Tools - Beginners Guide to Cookie Decorating

My TOP 10 Basic cookie decorating supplies/tools that you'll need to start decorating cookies.

This list will be part of my beginners guide to cookie decorating.
As you continue on your journey to cookie decorating, you'll want to invest in other cookie tools, but to start off you don’t need much...hopefully this guide will help you to know the basic supplies you need to get started 😉

Please bear in mind that is my personal recommendation for someone who wants to try their hand at cookie decorating, so it's just my two cents from my own experience of cookie decorating.

My Top 10 List of most useful decorating tools:

1. Adjustable Rolling Pin

I like using a rolling pin with adjustable spacers so that my cookies are even in thickness. I highly recommend getting one with an adjustable rolling pin. I used to roll my dough in 6mm thickness until recently when i purchased an additional 8mm spacer which I prefer. Mine is the Stainless Steel Rolling Pin that comes with 4 Adjustable Rings as shown in my video.

2. Cookie cutters
You can use any shape you would like, however to start with I would recommend the double sided cutters with basic shapes. also if you are keen on experimenting a bit further, a cookie cutter set that comes with various different shapes like Wilton 101 cookies cutter set can be very handy to start with.

3. Piping Bags
I use a very basic piping tips and there are 2 different ways of using the piping bag. You can use it as a tipless piping bag, which means using it on their own or you can use it with couplers & piping tips as shown in my video.

4. Coupler & Piping tips (these two usually goes hand-in-hand)
Its very handy to use a coupler when you use piping tips as they enables you to swap/change piping tips during your decorating process easily. I started off with Wilton piping tips and as I get more into cookie decorating I found PME piping tips which is great for finer details and writing.

5. Scribe tools (or you can use toothpicks) or BooBoo Sticks
You can use toothpicks when you first start decorating, but I would highly recommend investing in a scribe tool or a BooBoo stick later on as they are very handy to have on hand. My fave Scribe tool is from Scribes by Vivid Sister, you will see my pretty scribes in most of my video tutorial.

6. Food colouring
I prefer to use the gel food colour so that it won’t affect the icing consistency. To start with I would recommend getting a set of colours. I found the most essential colours are: White, Black, Red & Ivory (to make skin colour)

7. Edible food markers
I used them A LOT, to mark the areas of my cookies as well as on my icing during the whole decorating process. I use predominantly 2 types of edible markers/pen. The Rainbow Dust double ended fine-tip pens, for these pens you have to buy them individually in different colours, so i would recommend getting a black one to start with. If you need various colours, get the Food Doodler fine tip marker set, these are very good markers and they always come in handy to mark guidelines while decorating.

8. Spray Bottle
This is an essential tool to get the right consistency icing when you need to thin your icing to get just the right consistency.

9. Mini Spatulas
This is one of my “MUST HAVE” tools to mix my icing.
I cannot mix my icing without these spatulas as they are the perfect size for my hands, they also help reduce air bubbles as the spatula scrapes the sides of the bowl and as I fold in my icing it will eliminate chances of air bubbles in my icing.

My mini spatulas are 15cm in size and you can purchase them from Amazon now:

10. Bag clips
To start with you can use rubber bands to tie the end of your piping bag, however I would recommend investing in a handy bag-clips, they are usually easy to find & very affordable in places like your local supermarket or K-Mart or Ikea.
