Timing Belt Replacement - Renault Clio 1.2 16v D4F
How to change a timing belt on a Renault clio 1.2 16v (D4F engine) as well as replacing the water pump and tensioner with new replacements.
The clio has just recently passed the 70,000 mile mark, i don't know when the timing belt is due on these engines, it hadn't been done before so i thought it was a good idea to change it now.
Having changed the 406's timing belt about a month ago i felt a bit more confident tackling the same job on the clio. However on the 406 removing the crankshaft pulley bolt was very easy it came off with the impact wrench, on the clio it took 4 different attempts to get the bolt off with the final solution being to wedge a screwdriver in the flywheel ring teeth and then turn the bolt, however as i was working on the car in the afternoons after work the attempts to get the bolt off happened over a few days with WD40 being sprayed around the area each time which would have also helped to remove the bolt.
The water pump was replaced as it showed signs that it was leaking, and the tensioner was also replaced as it came in the box with the new belt, i purchased a Gates timing belt kit, they seem to be a good quality part, it is not the cheapest on the market, but with timing belts you cant really skimp on quality unlike other parts
The cost for the new belt kit (which included the tensioner) and the water pump came to a total of £82 from my local motor factors.
The tensioning procedure is mentioned in the Haynes manual but its very confusing, thanks to lancs dave on renault forums who clarified the procedure which i followed when doing this job.
You will need to refill the coolant system, i discarded the coolant that was caught in the bucket, because the coolant passed over the oily subframe, and the bucket was not 100% clean. To see the full video on properly filling the D4F engine with coolant here is the link:

This video is only intended to help you with the process of changing the timing belt on one of these engines, its something you need to be confident that you can do, if you don't feel confident take the car to a mechanic as getting it wrong can completely wreck the engine.
Any comments, or suggestions are welcome
