Keeping Chickens in Extreme Cold | Off Grid Alaska
We give you our tips and tricks for keeping a healthy and happy flock in a cold climate that routinely drops below zero Fahrenheit.
Our large flock of predominately Icelandic chickens have an open air coop with no additional heat. Keeping chickens in an off grid setting in Alaska comes with its challenges including the risk of frostbite and providing the chickens with light during the darkest winter months.
We feed our chickens a wholesome grain recipe in the winter months and ferment their feed when the weather allows.
Whole Grain Chicken Feed:
- 3 parts field peas (whole or milled)
- 2 parts black oil sunflower seeds
- 2 parts barley (whole or crimped)
- 2 parts oats (whole or crimped)
- 1 part hard red winter wheat
- 1 part cracked corn
*This recipe will provide approximately 16% protein (based on online protein values of each ingredient).
