The Ingush are a people of ‘ezdel’ (a spiritual-moral code of honor).
They are the main builders of towers in the Caucasus. They refer to themselves as “Ghalghai” (pronounced [ʁalʁaɪ]). Mountainous Ingushetia, in the Middle Ages also known as Dzurdzuketi, with its many fortresses, is a place where the Great Silk Road once passed through.

The Ingush are Sunni Muslims and speak the Ingush language. Before that, most of the Ingush clans practised paganism and in some parts, christianity. The Ingush practiced a unique pagan religion, comparable to that of Ancient Greece. Many sanctuaries in the mountainous region remain intact to this day. Troughout the 18th and 19th century, the Ingush people peacefully converted to Islam. Historically, the Ingush (Ингуши) have been referred to as Dzurdzuki, Kisti, Glighvi, Makhaloni (Machelones), Alani, Gelai (Gargarei) and Galgai. Many researchers link them to the ancient civilization of Urartu.

The Ghalghai are believed to be the most ancient and autochthonous people of the Caucasus. According to the genealogical table drawn up by Leonti Mroveli, the 11th-century Georgian chronicler, the legendary forefather of the Ingush was “Kavkasos” (Caucas), hence the name Kavkasians (Caucasians).
