Inflatable Robots – More Than Hot Air | Matthias Hofer | TEDxZurich

Traditional robot arms are very capable, but they have one big limitation: they are not very safe for humans to interact with. This talk, from Matthias Hofer, presents an alternative approach to robotic manipulators - an inflatable robot arm. The prototype developed at ETH Zurich is designed to be safe and can bump into a person without causing any danger. In this TEDxZurich talk, you'll learn more about the soft robotic arm that leverages sensing and learning control approaches inspired by the human arm. The possibility to work in close collaboration with humans has the potential to enable various applications in the fields of health care, logistics and farming. Matthias is a PhD candidate at ETH Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Raffaello D'Andrea. His passion for engineering in general and robotics in particular aroused during his studies at ETH Zurich, where he was awarded the ETH medal for his Master's Thesis in 2016. His research lies at the intersection of robotics, machine learning and hardware design and aims to advance safe robots that can collaborate with humans.
