The past few years have introduced humanity to their most intimate life partners: the trillions of bacterial cells that co-habit our bodies. Even as the Human Microbiome Project is still working to map the genetic makeup of these fellow travelers, projects around the world are starting to connect the dots between a healthy human microbiome and the microbial profiles of everything from our homes to our city streets to the fields that grow our breakfast oats. Just as Google Earth tapped vast amounts of satellite data and GIS information to bring us a new interactive medium for exploring the world's topography, perhaps the time is right to begin building a new interactive map of our microbiomes—to track the constantly shifting flows of microbes with an eye to improving the quality of life on the planet.
