This week the Mortons on the Move take a look at the Air Head Composting Toilet.
Composting toilets have long been used in boats and RVs, but recently have been gaining in popularity among RVers who wish to boondock for extended periods of time.
The Air Head Composting toilet is a waste separating toilet. Depending on use, you can compost the solid waste inside the toilet. Two “buckets” - Solids in one, liquids in another. No flushing, although there is lever on the side that controls the opening and closing of the solids bucket. A vent pipe and fan pull air and odor from the bucket drying the solids waste and leaving your bathroom odor-free.
Features / Benefits:
No water usage
Small amount of electricity required (about 3 watts for fan)
Gaskets on toilet seat keeps smell down, real toilet seat
Urine container easily removable and emptyable
Peephole in urine tank see urine level
Entire toilet easily removable
Fans move air to dry solids and remove odor
Crank handle, can order it either side depending on your installation needs
Need to keep it clean, spray with vinegar water every so often
Design catches most urine even with solids flap open
Pee bucket requires daily emptying
Easy to clean pee bucket with vinegar or bleach every so often to stop smell and break up crystals
Easy solids emptying process, once every few weeks.
Our thoughts:
We had been living in an RV for 3 years prior to doing the installation and were very used to dealing with our waste, so this was an easy transition and had been thinking about it for almost a year. Can’t say it would have been as easy if we were jumping into this from a household toilet. You have to be comfortable with the idea of dealing with the waste.
Fan sucks smell out from toilet so there is almost never any smell, we never use our bathroom fan any more. Overall we love it, would not go back to conventional RV toilet.
Toilet works as designed. If we used it less or was just one person would prob last longer, often gets moisture logged after about a week and can’t catch up. Get another week then empty or we add dry peat moss to help dry it out if there is space.
Saves us tons of water allows us to be off grid longer. These are used heavily in boats, no pump out requirements.
