Can translations help? Yes!
Deborah, a fellow online teacher, kindly agreed to help me review and practice what I know so far in Spanish. I'll share excerpts from our conversation. Deborah has experience teaching both Spanish and English.

NOTE: As a beginner, I need many Spanish words translated into English. I can understand some vocabulary if there's a visual cue, but certain words require some explanation. As a more advanced speaker of Russian, I need fewer translations, but it still helps to clarify the meanings and uses of high level words with the occasional use of English. My tutors mostly stick to Russian, but it helps that they know English as well. Guessing from context is a good skill to develop. Hearing explanations in the target language is also a useful challenge. In general, maximizing the use of the target language is wonderful, but I'm not against translations. In this video, hearing Deborah's explanation in English helped me understand two similar Spanish words.
