Emphysema: Types, Pathogenesis and morphology
Permanent abnormal enlargement of air spaces distal to the terminal bronchioles with destruction of the alveolar septa with little or no fibrosis
There are four major types:
(1) centriacinar
(2) panacinar
(3) paraseptal
(4) irregular.
Pathogenesis Genetic deficiency of the antiprotease α1-antitrypsin have a markedly enhanced tendency to develop pulmonary emphysema which is compounded by smoking.
