A month-long BBC Uzbek series, focusing on Central Asian migrant labour in Russia's far north, saw series producer Diloram Ibrahimova travel to Yakutia to discover the harsh realities of working at sub-zero temperatures in the diamond industry.It was difficult to find migrants from Uzbekistan who would speak on the record about their experiences. A deep-seated fear prevented them from speaking out, despite being thousands of miles away from Uzbekistan, where the government looks unkindly on those who criticise the authorities.
One of the migrants was an illegal builder on a construction site. He told us how they work at minus 50˚C. He gave us an interview sitting with his back to the camera, wearing a cap.
