Ask David About Ashtanga Yoga
David Swenson is one of the most important Ashtanga Yoga teachers of our time; spreading the teachings around the world since the 1970's. David is one of only a handful of Westerners to have learned the full Ashtanga system including all of the asana sequences and pranayama as originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois.
I (Linda) met him in 2003 and was captivated by his light, friendly approach to this demanding asana practice. As well as his sincerity, generosity and simple kindness!

QUESTIONS ASKED:
1. What is the magic of asana? The life-changing effects of a consistent Ashtanga practice, could those effects have happened if one was to do something else instead? For instance, reading poetry, enjoying a cup of coffee, taking long walks, jogging?
2. For someone who starts practicing ashtanga irregularly regularly from the mid-40’s, how practical is it to be able to lift up from supta kurmasana? It’s her dream to be able to do this. But is age a barrier? And even if she achieves this, what’s the next limit? How far can she go?
3. When we practice yoga every day with dedication, is it certain that we can gain qualities such as:
• acting with compassion, patience & perseverance,
• able to control over how we react to circumstances, situations & challenges in our daily life,
• be more mindful, focused and present in every situation,
These are beautiful qualities that I would like to cultivate. Can Yoga bring them to me?
4. Do you think accessible Ashtanga is the future of this tradition? If yes, do you think it has something to do with the notion of functional approach?
5. When can one start back to sun salutations after hip replacement surgery?
