New Approaches to Old Questions in Fremont Archaeology featuring Katie Richards
Situated on the far northern frontier of the American Southwest, Fremont peoples occupied much of what is now Utah from roughly A.D. 400-1400. Despite over 100 years of research, archaeologists are still debating big picture questions, such as what does “Fremont” mean, and what was the relationship between Fremont peoples and those living in the greater Southwest? The Fremont region was one of cultural hybridity where aspects of Southwestern material culture, such as architecture and painted ceramic designs, were adopted and transformed into something that was distinctly Fremont. Fremont material culture shows a unique blending of local and ancestral Pueblo traits that suggest a strong Southwest connection, or even heritage, but also demonstrates a desire to be distinct from the Southwest.
