SpaceX Starship Update: NASA suspends SpaceX $2 9 billion moon lander contract after rivals protest
SpaceX’s Lander Contract Halted!! Let’s see why? On 30th April, Friday, NASA told SpaceX to halt work for the lunar lander contract, which SpaceX had won weeks ago to develop a lander version of Starship. Owing to the several challenges from the rival bidders of the Human Landing System at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), NASA had taken this step. Just after Blue Origin placed their protest, another bidder “Dynetics” filed their protest with the GAO on 26th April. Dynetics protested that NASA had selected only a single company for HLS, “Option A”, which is SpaceX. They also said that NASA had chosen “the most anti-competitive and high risk option available” when NASA got a low budget in fiscal year 2021. According to the protest filed by Dynetics, “NASA failed to consider the risks inherent in SpaceX’s technical approach and, more specifically, information too close at hand for NASA to ignore i.e., that four SpaceX Starships have exploded at various stages of their test flights in recent months. NASA has given SpaceX a pass on its demonstrable lack of such systems engineering.”
