Can You Avoid Double-Bladed Saber in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order?

Throughout the game Cal uses a broken saber that belonged to his master, Jaro Tapal. It used to be a double-bladed saber but due to damage only one blade is still working. During a normal playthrough it is later repaired at one of the workbenches. So here's the question: Can we actually avoid this upgrade and finish the game with a single saber?

And that's not all. At one point in the game Cal's weapon breaks and he travels to Ilum to build a brand new split saber. In this video I also try to find the answers to two additional questions:
1. Is it possible to avoid getting the saber crushed?
2. Can we beat the game with broken non-functional saber?
