The term Direct Market Access simply refers to the method in which you interact with the open market, with Direct Market Access you are able to see the live order book giving you a glimpse of interest in the given instrument you are looking to trade. Often, when trading through a retail account a trader is actually interacting with their own broker instead of directly with the open market. Also, you are paying a different fee structure with DMA, instead of paying your broker a commission for executing your trade you're simply paying the execution fee at the selected ATS you use to send your order to market. In some cases, a trader can also make money on fees trading with direct market access utilizing ATS order types that actually pay you a rebate for providing liquidity to the market.
