Division emerging among Republicans as Trump urges Pence to 'come through'

Vice President Mike Pence is facing increased pressure from ardent Trump Supporters – spurred on by the president – to try and overturn the certification process confirming Joe Biden’s election victory.

The National Guard has been activated after Trump supporters stormed Congress in an attempt to intimate lawmakers.

DC’s Mayor Muriel Bowser has issued a city-wide curfew for the district of Columbia from 6pm on Wednesday January 6 until 6am Thursday January 7, following violent episodes between protestors and police.

President Trump this morning – in a rally outside the White House – urged supporters to march on Capitol Hill and “cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women”.

The president also admonished Mr Pence for not overturning the election, despite the vice president not having any constitutional rights to do so.

“We’re going to have to fight much harder and Mike Pence is going to have to come through for us, and if he doesn’t that will be a sad day for our country because you’re sworn to uphold our Constitution,” Mr Trump told crowds.

“Now it is up to congress to confront this egregious assault on our democracy.”

Division is appearing in the Republican party inside the capitol, with senior Republican Mitch McConnell urging members to finally acknowledge the election outcome as Biden victory.
