Return to Sport and COVID - 19: How ATs are Reducing Risk with Policies and Procedures

In the midst of the pandemic, athletic trainers have worked diligently to update their policies and procedures to reduce risk for student athletes, coaches and staff. Even in normal circumstances, there is an inherent risk to playing sports. Today, there are new risks associated with the transmission of COVID-19 and other pandemic-related health concerns like detraining and an increased risk of heat illness.

The policies and procedures that athletic trainers develop serve as a road map for making sports as safe as possible. In these policies, athletic trainers outline the requirements, rules and processes for important health and safety considerations like sports physicals, emergency action plans, the return to play process and inclement weather. In today's environment, athletic trainers have added new policies related to athlete screening, use of face coverings, social distancing requirements, safe hydration methods and managing positive COVID cases on the team.

If your school or team does not employ an athletic trainer but are resuming sports, who is managing these important policies for the health and safety of your child? Now more than ever, students athletes deserve to have an athletic trainer on their team.
