About the UA Native Languages of Arizona Sign Initiative:
In 2021, the University of Arizona Linguistics Department and NAATE developed the Native
Languages of Arizona Campus Sign Initiative to
heighten the visibility of Arizona’s Native nations and Native languages on permanent building signs across campus. Our hope is to be able to include representation from all Native Nations in Arizona. The University partnered with the Tohono O’odham Nation to construct the first sign on the Communication Building. Since then, we have walked visiting tribal leaders to the Communication Building to show them the sign and invite their tribe to participate in this initiative. We continue to receive the same feedback from tribal leaders when they see the signage, which is that they are in awe that the University is taking these steps to help Native students and faculty feel a sense of home on campus.
Office of Native American Advancement & Tribal Engagement:
• N. Levi Esquerra, Senior Vice President, Native American Advancement & Tribal Engagement
• Tina Gargus, Program Manager
• Jacquelyn Valenzuela, Executive Associate to Levi Esquerra
About the Hopi Tribe:
The Hopi Tribe is a sovereign nation located in northeastern Arizona. The reservation occupies part of Coconino and Navajo counties, encompasses more than 1.5 million acres, and is made up of 12 villages on three mesas. Since time immemorial the Hopi people have lived in Hopi Tutskwa and have maintained their sacred covenant with Maasaw, the ancient caretaker of the earth, to live as peaceful and humble farmers respectful of the land and its resources. Over the centuries, the Hopi people have survived as a tribe, and to this day have managed to retain their culture, language, and religion despite influences from the outside world.
