The city of Vorkuta is in the Republic of Komi of the Russian Federation. The city is also the fourth largest in the Arctic Circle and the easternmost city in European Russia. Located on the Vorkuta River, the river was originally named Varkut-Yakha , which is translated from the Nenets language as "a river abounding with bears" .....

Industrial "High energy" coal fields by the Vorkuta River were discovered in the summer of 1930 by the geologist Georgy Chernov. From 1931 the coal began to be mined. In the place the coal was discovered the Vorkuta industrial community was founded. The following year, the Vorkutlag, also known as the Vorkuta Gulag was established to exploit the resources of the Pechora Coal Basin. Becoming one of the major Soviet era GULAG labour camps by the late 1930s, Vorkuta grew rapidly as a support for the camp. From 1939, Polish prisoners were held here until Russia joined the allies, after it was attacked by Germany. The camp was then also used to hold German P.O.W.s captured on the Eastern Front during The Great Patriotic War as well as criminals, Soviet citizens and those from Soviet united countries deemed to be dissidents and enemies of the state during the Soviet era. At its peak, there were approximately 132 sub-camps in the Vorkuta Gulag system and prisoners numbered some 73 thousand people...The camp was closed in 1962
On November 26, 1943, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, the town of Vorkuta was given the status of a city........
