The sternoclavicular joint is the only articulation between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton. It is a saddle type of synovial joints that functions as a ball and socket joint. The articulating surfaces of this joint include the sternum at the clavicular notch of the manubrium, the clavicle at the sternal articular surface and the first costal cartilage.
It is strengthened by three ligaments:
- sternoclavicular ligament
- interclavicular ligament
- costoclavicular ligament
The SC joint is also made stable and strengthened by the several shoulder muscles and its joint capsule.
The sternoclavicular joint is involved in different movements of the shoulder girdle.
In this video tutorial we will go over the anatomy, location and movements of the sternoclavicular joint:
- 0:10 joint type and articulating surfaces
- 0:52 stabilizing ligaments
- 1:21 sternoclavicular joint movement
