Alexander Betts: "Refugees as a Resource" | Skoll World Forum 2016
Alexander Betts is Professor of Forced Migration and International Affairs at the University of Oxford, where he is Director of the Refugee Studies Centre, and a Fellow of Green-Templeton College. His research focuses on the politics and economics of refugees, and has undertaken extensive fieldwork in Africa. He is the author or editor of numerous books including Protection by Persuasion: International Cooperation in the Refugee Regime (Cornell University Press, 2009), Survival Migration: Failed Governance and the Crisis of Displacement (Cornell University Press, 2013), and the forthcoming Mobilising the Diaspora: How Refugees Challenge Authoritarianism (Cambridge University Press, 2016) and Refugee Economies: Forced Displacement and Development (Oxford University Press, 2017). His work has been published in journals including Perspectives on Politics, Ethics and International Affairs, Global Governance, International Journal of Refugee Law, and the Journal of International Relations and Development. He has written for the Guardian, New York Times and Foreign Affairs and appears regularly on news channels including CNN, Al Jazeera, and the BBC. He has previously worked for UNHCR and as a consultant to a range of international organisations and governments. He has served as an Advisor to the World Humanitarian Summit and is founder of the Humanitarian Innovation Project (www.oxhip.org). He is a TED speaker and has been honoured as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2016.
