Sleep with One Eye Open: The Role of Scary Movies in a Scary World | Kaitlyn Herndon | TEDxWUSTL

We all have nightmares, but some people pay to see theirs on the big screen. Horror movies occupy a controversial place in film studies and conversations, but there is plenty to be learned about ourselves, and about one another, from a genre that unapologetically preys on our fear. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Kaitlyn is a senior majoring in English with a concentration in fiction writing, minoring in Russian. On campus, she is one of three art directors for Unscripted, WashU’s version of The Moth, and an associate justice on Student Union’s Constitutional Council.
After a stint in the legal field, working for the Nevada Supreme Court and writing new policy for the Nevada Legislature, Kaitlyn spent two weeks studying for the LSAT only to realize that law school was not for her. So, she returned to her first love, storytelling. It is her dream to use art to comfort and guide people through the mire of difficult or misunderstood emotions. She hopes to tell stories that will give people something to hold onto when the world seems darkest. She is moving to L.A. after graduation to write and direct scary movies, which she somehow thinks can achieve the aforementioned. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
