In this uncommon alliance between western democracies and the Soviet Union, both sides obviously knew they couldn’t completely trust each other. But since this was a first-time experience for all of them, they couldn’t quite figure out where to put the cursor: to what extent one could actually believe in the good faith of such an ally?
