5 Reasons Why I Bought a Suzuki DRZ400S (and Not a Honda CRF450L)

When it came time to upgrade from my Honda CRF250L, only two bikes were really in the running to be my next dual sport: the Honda CRF450L and the Suzuki DRZ400S. These two Japanese dual sport motorcycles couldn't be more different. One is a 20 year old marvel of late 90's technology and the other is a freshly-released, top of the line bike taking most of its design cues from modern dirt bikes.

I test rode both bikes and ultimately decided that in the battle of Honda CRF450L vs Suzuki DRZ400S, the winner, for me at least, was the DRZ 400. There are many reasons why I decided to buy a DRZ400S, but these five factors were the biggest for me.

The Honda CRF450L price is a huge reason to go with the DRZ400S instead. You can get a DRZ for way less money. The maintenance intervals on the Honda CRF450L are also a lot more frequent than on the old tried and true Suzuki DRZ400. Aftermarket and community support were also huge considerations, and the Honda wins in these categories as well. Finally, the DRZ is just really the bike that I personally need right now. It's exactly the right amount of power and capability without exceeding my ability, and the used dual sport motorcycle market here in the PNW is so crazy good I can always sell my DRZ later on and invest in a CRF 450L if I decide that I need an even bigger improvement.
