In this video you will see how you can connect your APM 2.5 to an RPI and have live telemetry over 3G. This allows you to do long range missions while still have telemetry data on your ground station even outside the range of the radio telemetry module. The only condition is to have your mission planned in an area with GSM coverage.
We are using a standard 3G dongle and a standard Logical Level Converter between the APM and RPI to them have communicate telemetry data over serial.
The latency with this setup is somewhere around 200-300ms which in my opinion is good enough. Depending on the quality of the GSM signal this latency might increase. We will be doing real live testing and let you know what the results are.
Keep in mind that not only you may receive telemetry over 3G but you may also issues any commands you would like to your APM such as order it to return home, move the camera around and so on.
Special thanks to our Networking & Linux expert, Mihai Turcu who helped us setup the RPI to our needs.
