Rescuing a flying-fox found under a car: Sarah and her Little Princess
Sarah is an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found on the ground under a car and who then tried to climb a tree and kept falling down.
She has hit her head and was being attacked by the local predatory birds, currawongs.
She also had a little baby on her - the Little Princess.
Initially in care she has been horribly stressed and anxious, and very agitated. She resisted her baby being removed for care (understandable) and I had to let her adrenaline rush dissipate before she allowed me to take the baby without screaming the place down.
She currently isn't able to care for her baby. She has smacked her head into something really hard, and baby hasn't been groomed or cared for (covered in poo and pee), and mum's milk supply is minimal so baby is hungry.
Sarah will be cared for separately for a day or 2, and I'll care for the little Princess, and they will be reunited when mum feels better, hopefully within 48 hours. Once Sarah's adrenaline rush from the accident and capture ran out, she became very quiet, calm and unwell.
Sarah has some corneal ulceration with a dry irritated surface. She is on eye ointment twice a day with lubrication ointment to sooth the dry surface.
Currawong attacks often cause concussion, but Sarah managed to mostly avoid damage with only one puncture near her eye.
Her name comes from the street in which she was found, Sarah Street; her baby was named for a bat carer I work with, whose actual name is Sarah and whom I call the Princess. She's an awesome and intuitive carer for complex head injuries.
