Where The Original Tree Ring Cake Comes From | Baking Baumkuchen In Salzwedel, Germany | DW Food

Baking the world-renowned German “Baumkuchen” (or tree ring cake) is a complex undertaking. It’s baked in layers, one after the other over a roller, giving the impression of the annual rings formed in tree trunks. It’s popular in Germany, but also has a large fan base in Asia, especially in Japan. German confectioner Karl Joseph Wilhelm Juchheim introduced the buttery layered cake there a good century ago. The oldest surviving recipe can be found in a Heidelberg manuscript from 1450. We went to the small German town of Salzwedel, which is considered the birthplace of the original Baumkuchen, to see how this traditional tree ring cake has been baked in the same way for over 100 years.
