The Emergency was declared in India on the basis of internal disturbances from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, due to controversial circumstances of political instability under the prime ministership of Indira Gandhi. An Indian politician Inder Kumar Gujral served as the 12th Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. Gujral joined the Congress party (INC) in 1964 and was very close to Indira Gandhi. During the period of Emergency in June 1975, Gujral was serving as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, where he was in charge of the media and Doordarshan during a time of censorship.

On being ordered by Sanjay Gandhi to impose censorship and allow the broadcasting of whatever he said, I.K Gujral denied by saying, “Behave Sanjay Gandhi! I am your mother's minister and you are no one to give me an order.” Not only this, a very popular Kannada actress, producer, and social activist Snehalatha Reddy also arrested for protesting against the Emergency.

One of the most loved singers of that time, Kishore Kumar also denied performing in the Youth congress rally in the favour of Emergency due to which his shows were banned on Doordarshan.
