Why do Privacy Screen Protectors SUCK?

I’ll be honest with you, I don’t like privacy screen protectors. They hurt my eyes. Which is why I haven’t done a privacy screen protector review since July 2015.

Again, this channel isn’t sponsored, so if a product class sucks, I won’t do reviews for them.

So I’ve spent the last 8 months trying to figure out why I don’t like privacy screen protectors. And I’ve cased it.

See what I think are the best "normal" screen protectors: https://youtu.be/wR-gKtkurB8

My disdain for privacy screen protectors comes from the fact that your eyes aren’t seeing the same thing because of the space between your eyes.

At MREH, Monty and I base all our reviews on actual usage. Now this video would usually get wrapped up into the actual roundup video BUT because of COVID-19 it gets its own primetime video. Again, I don’t like privacy screen protectors BUT in order to figure out which one is best, I need to figure out why I dislike them.

For my privacy screen protector tests, I’ve actually come up with another contraption to help me measure the angles of the filter consistently between products. I’ve called here Edith.

With privacy screen protectors, it’s basically a static venetian blind for your screen. Looking at the device straight on minimizes the appearance of the slats but looking at an angle obscures your view.

BUT here’s the catch, if I look at a privacy screen protector at an angle, my right eye sees a different image than the left. Here’s an actual example.

I’ve got two iPhone about 18 inches apart and one iPhone with a privacy screen protector a couple of feet away. As I turn the privacy screen protector you’ll notice the screen blanks out at different angles.

Here’s an iPad with an iPhone privacy screen protector on it. Again, notice how the images are different as I rotate the iPad?

Those consistently changing images are almost like a flicker any time you’re not looking at the device straight on. And this happens basically anytime you’re looking at your phone NOT on a flat surface.

Now the amount of flickering depends on the viewing angle of the filter on the privacy screen protector. Some only have a 45 degree angle, others have a 28 degree angle.

That took me 8 months to figure out while using using these screen protectors across all my devices. BUT now that I know about it, my privacy screen protectors are going to be that much better which is exciting.

So that’s all I got for this video. I got for this video.
