Sometimes I hear from people, “I’ll wait until I get some symptoms.” Is that a good idea? What are some of the risk factors for colorectal cancer?
A lot of patients initially come to the physician when they have bleeding. That often is usually the initial presentation. Many people will spend months saying, “Oh, it’s my hemorrhoids." However, in my mind, rectal bleeding is cancer unless otherwise proven.
If there are any symptoms, it is something that should be immediately evaluated. Certainly, to wait for symptoms is not the right thing to do and as we’ve heard from Dr. Saltz very emphatically. Doing early detection is absolutely the best way to address this.
There are studies that have shown to reduce mortality rate with colonoscopy as a screening method and that’s not even the case for things like PSA screening or even mammography. There is more controversy on that and on the impact of mortality.
I think really the best way to address this is early detection of pre cancerous lesions and that we can address.
