Learning Tuesdays | Building a Parent-Centered Ecosystem for Out-of-School Learning

Community assets, amenities and informal learning institutions — such as libraries, museums, zoos, aquariums, performing arts organizations, botanical gardens, parks and historical sites — play a major role in creating learning-rich environments for children and supporting parents’ efforts to expose their children to learning experiences outside of the home and school. As parents, educators and communities work to support the children most negatively impacted by learning loss during the pandemic, these places can and should be leveraged to assure equitable learning recovery. Yet, parents who face economic challenges often are unaware of the learning resources provided by community assets, amenities and informal learning institutions ― or they do not know how to connect with them, or they deem them inaccessible, unaffordable or unwelcoming.

CGLR envisions an ecosystem that supports children’s learning in a wide range of out-of-school environments:

At home with parents and other caregivers — by equipping and supporting parents to create book- and language-rich environments at home;
In the everyday places and spaces children go to with their families ― grocery stores, laundromats, barbershops, buses and trains, waiting rooms — through dedicated play areas, special programming, signage with teaching tips, books and other tools and equipment that transform these spaces into places of active, playful, engaging, meaningful and interactive learning; and
At community assets, amenities and informal learning institutions that provide enriching cultural, educational, recreational and social settings where high-dosage tutoring is often provided and where parents can expose their children to learning-rich content and experiences.
