Canada’s leaders are worried about people around the world. But what about Canadians?
Louise Arbour was sworn in as Canada's 31st Governor General today, June 8, 2026. The former Supreme Court Justice and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights gave a speech about Canada's mature democracy, AI misinformation, and the world's global obligations. Mark Carney spoke about everyone deserving dignity regardless of where they were born. Jim and Iain on what those two worldviews mean when applied to running a country.
Topics covered:
► Louise Arbour confirmed as 31st Governor General, appointed by Carney on May 5, 2026, sworn in today in a ceremony at the Senate of Canada building attended by Carney, outgoing Governor General Mary Simon, Chief Justice Richard Wagner, former prime ministers Jean Chrétien and Joe Clark, and National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak
► Arbour's inauguration speech warning against extreme polarization and AI misinformation, speaking about Canada's mature democracy and Canada's standing in the world, with Carney speaking about everyone deserving dignity regardless of nationality or passport
► Jim and Iain's application of the Somewheres vs Anywheres framework from Stephen Harper's 2018 book Right Here, Right Now: Carney and Arbour as Anywheres whose worldview shapes the tone and legal architecture of the Canadian state, while the Somewheres who built and paid into the system receive CPP and wait six months for a doctor
► The CPP vs asylum seeker argument Jim raises: Canadians who have worked all their lives in some cases receiving less in CPP than denied asylum seekers receive in combined federal and provincial support, presented as Jim's characterisation with the caveat that CPP varies significantly by contribution history
► The CRTC's proposal to give commercial radio stations indefinite licence terms, open for public comment until July 6, saving operators the cost of attending renewal hearings every five to seven years, in a sector that is dying, with Bell selling stations for almost nothing, 7,000 total employees across 747 stations nationwide, and the Carney government extending journalism funding to cover radio and television
► Jim's observation that the CBC shoehorns progressive ideology into every topic including swimming, that he does not know if his Tesla has a radio and has never looked, and that the government is propping up dying institutions with taxpayer money rather than allowing the market to determine which ones survive
► Stephen Harper's Right Here, Right Now argument that mainstream governments ignoring Somewheres in favour of global Anywhere thinking produces the populist backlash the Liberal establishment has spent years condemning while doing nothing to address
When the Governor General and the Prime Minister both speak the language of global citizens, who is speaking the language of Canadians who built this country?
