Ecological Tolerance and the Niche Concept

UNIT 2: BIODIVERSITY
Ecological Tolerance and the Niche Concept No species can live everywhere.

Every organism exists within a set of physical and chemical constraints—temperature, moisture, pH, salinity, light intensity, nutrient availability—that together define the range of conditions it can tolerate.
But tolerating a condition is not the same as thriving under it, and the range over which an organism merely survives is considerably broader than the range over which it grows and reproduces at maximum efficiency.

Key topics covered:
- tolerance ranges as additive
- The Niche Concept
- lies in resource partitioning

Part of the "AP Environmental Science" series.
