How To Untangle Root Bound Trees Without Killing Them
In this video, I’m working on several potted Japanese maples and showing the hidden half of trees that most people overlook: the root system.
When trees stay in pots too long, their roots can start circling, tangling, drying out, dying back, or even forming girdling roots that slowly suffocate the tree over time. I’ll show you how I tease apart rootbound trees, rinse out old soil, choose the right pot size, expose the root flare, remove problem roots, and my experience with different roots.
We’ll also look at signs of transplant stress, how to tell when a potted tree needs water, why I avoid fabric pots, and what healthy recovery looks like after repotting.
This is especially helpful if you grow Japanese maples, bonsai-in-training, container trees, or any tree you plan to keep in a pot long term.
