The Rise and Fall of the TriJet

In the 60s and 70s a new giant emerged in the field of civil aviation - the tri jet, three-engined commercial planes came to dominate the skies and typify an era during the 'golden age' of jet travel. And yet their time was limited - soon tri jets began to disappear from the routes they had so reliably served for years. The likes of the hawker Siddeley Trident, McDonnell Douglas DC-10, Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, McDonnel Douglas MD-11 and Boeing 727 are still legends in the aviation world - yet hardly any remain in service today on cargo routes. This is the fascinating true story of the tri jet - from its progenitors like the Ju-52 and Ford Trimotor to the early pioneers like the Trident and 727 to the final iterations; the showdown between McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed - and the final fall from grace that saw tri jets retired from service around the world.
