9. Impulse Response of a Second-Order System | MATLAB Control Systems Tutorial

In this video, we analyze and simulate the impulse response of a second-order system using MATLAB.
This example focuses on an underdamped system with damping ratio ζ = 0.3 and natural frequency ωₙ = 3 rad/s.

You will learn:
✔ How to define system parameters (K, wn, zeta)
✔ How to construct the standard second-order transfer function
✔ How to use MATLAB’s impulse() function
✔ How to interpret peak, undershoot, oscillation, and exponential decay
✔ What the impulse response reveals about system stability and dynamics

This is video #9 in the Control Systems with MATLAB series.
The full code used in this tutorial is available on GitHub:

If you enjoy MATLAB, control systems, system dynamics, or are preparing for related university courses, this tutorial will help reinforce both theory and practice.
