The Jaguar Wildlife Corridor--with Music, Aug 1, 2021, by c.Susan Perz
This Pantanal adventure is set to music among jaguars, otters, capybaras along the river, warm community, and great beauty! It reveals the importance of ecotourism for local communities and wildlife. It highlights two local nonprofits and their efforts to identify and protect jaguars amidst the wildfires of the last two years--and the pandemic in 2020. Both of these threats left many local people jobless and afraid of losing their homes to the fires. Nonprofits brought food and supplies to people up and down the river--and equipment for local volunteers fighting the fires, which came inside about one third of the park in 2020. Nonprofits working together rescued animals, including 3 jaguars and other animals that were severely burned. Threats to the Pantanal and the Amazon are explained and ways to help are highlighted. The resilience of local people and the Pantanal is hopeful, but action is needed to protect the Amazon, which is now giving off 1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide more than it can absorb--due to massive deforestation from fires and from illegal logging and mining, corporate cattle farming, oil and gas drilling--all of which benefit corporations. Some corporations even use slave labor in the Amazon. The land where indigenous people live is the most protected and the least deforested because indigenous people around the world are the best caretakers of the land and ecosystems, according to multiple research studies. Indigenous rights are being trampled as their land is invaded and some local leaders have been killed. The movie ends with hope and original music as Reo "Mick" Jaguar crosses the river.
