Texas Lawmakers Eye Hemp Rules, Taxes, New Mexico Annexation

Texas lawmakers are returning to Austin next week to begin hearings for the upcoming legislative session, with a wide range of high-profile issues on the agenda.

Among the topics drawing attention: a renewed push to regulate hemp-derived THC products, efforts to lower property taxes and improve housing affordability, and a surprising proposal to study whether Texas could annex land from neighboring New Mexico.

Lawmakers say the goal is to balance economic growth, public safety, and consumer protections, while critics question the cost and feasibility of some proposals.
