New Life and New hope Pentecost 2026
Media vita in morte summus – in the Book of Common Prayer ‘ in the midst of life we are in death’ – it is true.
But it is also true that ‘in the midst of death we are in life’!
The plant may die, but its seeds fall to the ground and take root, autumn and winter give way to spring, a parting at Ascension gives way to Pentecost.
Luke describes the events as best he can, much as we might do, he uses the imagery of fire. They were on fire, the place alight, passion and devotion inflamed, hearts ablaze, the emotion burning, igniting beyond all control.
But most likely, Luke never intended us to take the story over literally. Today we might also say that someone’s speech was electrifying. We use metaphors all the time in everyday life –why don’t we let the Bible do the same thing?
Luke’s main point in Acts is not the special effects or even the drama of the gift of tongues, but spiritual transformation.
It may well be that the extraordinary, theatrical, immediate transformation of the Pentecost story is not the way it works with us, the changes may be more gradual and incremental, perhaps over a lifetime, but nevertheless they must be real, and enduring and courageous.
Part of the Church of Ireland, St Nicholas Church, Adare and its fellow churches teaches and ministers within the progressive Christianity tradition, with influences from the scholars who built on the work of the Jesus Seminar. It seeks to be a church that is welcoming and inclusive, affirming and open in its liberal theology; and whilst we don’t claim to have all the answers, we are most certainly committed to ‘living the questions’. We have influences of Celtic spirituality in our worship and view of the natural world, living as we do in the beauty of County Limerick.
The Church of Ireland also forms part of the Anglican communion which is an association of Anglican churches from 38 provinces, including the Church of England, the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Church in Wales, the Episcopal Church in the USA (otherwise known as the Episcopalians) and churches across the globe. With 80 million members, it is the third largest Christian body in the world, after the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.
