Louise Fletcher - Paintings (2018)

A selection of work available for sale and on show at the Gallery at the Art Shop, Hawksworth Street, Ilkley for the month of November, 2018.

ABOUT ME

I am passionate about the North Yorkshire landscape. My paintings are about the feel of the wind, the sense of endless space, the cry of the curlews… I believe nature heals and I think art does too.

I create multi-layered, semi-abstract paintings in which landscape serves as a jumping off point for exploration – an exploration of my own feelings, perceptions, and moods, but also an exploration of paint, colour, line, and texture. The results are often surprising, offering a sense of place while also hinting at multiple deeper meanings.

My paintings evolve over time, layer upon layer, and in this way, they mirror life and the landscape that has inspired them. Each new layer adds depth, but the history remains underneath and is glimpsed now and again. Each mark is evidence of what went before, each colour choice reflects the moment in which it was chosen. Just as in life, nothing can ever be fully erased; nothing is ever without meaning.

You can see my latest work here and – if it you share my love of space and colour and wild landscapes – you can sign up to hear from me each month (click here.)

HOW I WORK

My process is an intuitive one. I don’t work from photographs or sketches. I don’t always have a specific view in mind when I paint. But I walk the hills and moors around my home every day, so these experiences and memories are always with me.

I begin each painting with a period of ‘play’ or experimentation, moving paint, making marks, trying out ideas. Sometimes I sand my paintings back after a few layers of paint, revealing interesting textures and surprising marks. And then I begin to layer again.

It’s vital to stay open during this process – if I do, there is a moment when the painting speaks to me. All of a sudden, I know where we are going. From that point on, I need to take control and carefully guide my vision to completion. This means working more carefully, but always balancing that with a need to keep the energy and excitement of the beginning layers. It’s a delicate dance, but one I love.

Finally, there comes a point when there is no more that I can add. At that point, the painting is complete.
