The Longest Weather Forecast

The Great Red Spot is one of the most remarkable weather systems in the Solar System, a giant storm that has been observed on Jupiter for centuries.

Unlike storms on Earth, it exists within the deep atmosphere of a gas giant. Jupiter's rapid rotation, completing one day in about ten hours, generates powerful atmospheric bands and jet streams that help shape and confine the storm.

The Great Red Spot is a massive high-pressure system trapped between these fast-moving currents. Because Jupiter lacks a solid surface, storms can persist far longer than they typically do on Earth. Smaller storms have also been observed merging with the Great Red Spot, supplying it with additional energy.

Although the storm has gradually decreased in size over time, it remains one of the largest and longest-lived storms known.

A weather system sustained by the atmospheric physics of an entirely different world.

The universe, quietly.
