Welcome to Sunday Fun Day! Grab a coffee and settle in for some really fun loon footage. Obviously, Libby and I are moose nuts! We film them every fall, and hike for miles just to watch and study the rut. But we are just as passionate about loons.

One of my favorite things to do once the calendar switches to the month of May is to arrive at the local loon pond in the dark, and quietly slip the kayak into the water to go explore and take in a quiet morning in the fog with the loons. It takes getting my feet on the floor at 3:30am to be able to arrive in the dark and on the water by 4:30am. This video is all about the different vocalizations of loons, their haunting calls are such a beautiful part of Nature.

Libby is just as passionate as I am about loons. She spends nearly every morning from May to late July with them. Let’s talk a bit about how we go about filming the loons in a respectful manner. My work with them began many years ago. Just like any wildlife, loons have “body language” that you can read, and using long lenses and slow movements makes sure we are not interrupting their morning routines.

Did you know that it takes about 1000 pounds of small fish, crayfish, and insects to raise each loon baby from the hatch in June through to October when they are ready to fly to the ocean to spend their first of many winters there?
