Day 28: Somites & Segmentation – The Human Development Series

“Welcome to Day 28 of the Human Development Series on T.K Medicine Blogs.

Today, the embryo shows even more defined features. A major highlight: the appearance and organization of somites — segmented blocks of mesoderm that give rise to key structures of the musculoskeletal system.

🧬 Somites will eventually develop into:
• Vertebrae and ribs
• Skeletal muscles
• Dermis of the skin

At this stage, the embryo is C-shaped and measures approximately 4 mm. Other noticeable developments:
• Forebrain, otic, and lens placodes are prominent.
• Limb buds are clearly visible.
• The heart is actively pumping blood.

📌 Fun Fact: The number of somite pairs is often used by scientists to accurately stage embryonic development!

🌱 This phase marks the architectural planning of the body — spine, muscles, and skin begin to form their layout.
