Massive New York Shipyard Explosion Leaves 1 Dead, 36 Injured

A massive fire and two explosions at a New York City shipyard on Friday left one person dead and 36 others injured, most of them firefighters and emergency responders. Officials said the incident happened at a large metal structure located at the back of the shipyard. Multiple emergency calls were made around 3:30 p.m. reporting smoke and two workers trapped inside the basement area. Firefighters and EMS crews reached the scene within six minutes, but shortly after their arrival, the first explosion occurred, seriously injuring several firefighters and civilians. One civilian died at the scene.

According to officials, five firefighters and rescue paramedics were searching for the trapped workers inside and around the structure when a second explosion suddenly happened, causing additional injuries. A firefighter and a fire marshal who were inside the building at the time suffered the most serious injuries after being hit by a powerful shock wave from the blast. Fire officials described the situation as a fast-moving and highly dangerous emergency, especially because the rescue operations were taking place in confined spaces.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the fire remained active but was under control by Friday night, with more than 200 firefighters still working at the scene. Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore confirmed that a full investigation into the cause of the fire and explosions would begin as soon as possible. Doctors said the injured fire marshal remains in critical but stable condition with a fractured skull and minor brain bleeding, while the injured firefighter was improving and responding well to treatment.

Witnesses nearby reported hearing two loud explosions followed by a strong shock wave. The area around the shipyard includes several businesses such as a coffee roasting company and a storage facility. The shipyard itself was once owned by the historic Bethlehem Steel Company, known for building U.S. Navy ships during World War II.
